Promoting responsible mining and sustainable development: Final declaration of the West Africa regional workshop by the KP CSC

Members of the Kimberley Process Civil Society Coalition (KP CSC) from the Mano River Union gathered in Grand Bassam, Côte d’Ivoire, for a pivotal workshop. The meeting focused on assessing the impact of extractive industries, particularly diamond mining, on local communities in the region. Representatives from Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone participated in this important event.

The workshop aimed to uncover the root causes of the challenges faced by these communities and to develop actionable recommendations for responsible mining practices. Discussions centred on how mining can be conducted in ways that are economically beneficial, socially and ecologically responsible, and politically and financially transparent.

At the conclusion of the workshop, participants issued a comprehensive declaration. This document outlines key recommendations for regional authorities to enhance diamond governance and ensure that mining activities respect human rights.

This declaration serves as a call to action for all stakeholders to prioritize sustainable development and social justice in the region’s extractive industries. The KP CSC continues to advocate for transparent and accountable practices that protect the rights and well-being of local communities.
